چکیده

Introduction We present a natural framework for group-wise comparison of the regional variation of tissue parameters estimated from diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) over an anatomical region of interest (ROI). The regional variation model (RVM) fits curves of parameter variation directly to the DWMRI signals which captures the spatial changes in a natural way as well as reducing the effects of noise. Using statistical tests, we are able to localise regions of significant difference along the curves. Unlike traditional ROI analysis, we obtain a continuous representation of the parameter variation. Unlike VBM or TBSS [9], we detect differences in global trends of parameters and exploit the local coherence of parameter values in a natural way. We demonstrate the technique on the mid-sagittal corpus callosum (MSCC) in two distinct age groups and localise significant differences in the genu of the MSCC.

A Bayesian framework for modelling the regional variation of white matter microstructure

We present a Bayesian framework for the group-wise comparison of the regional variation of tissue parameters estimated from diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) over an anatomical region of interest (ROI). The regional variation model (RVM) fits a geometric model of parameter variation directly to the DW-MRI signals which captures the spatial changes in a natural way as well as reducing the effects ...

Regional White Matter Variation Associated with Domain-specific Metacognitive Accuracy

The neural mechanisms that mediate metacognitive ability (the capacity to accurately reflect on one's own cognition and experience) remain poorly understood. An important question is whether metacognitive capacity is a domain-general skill supported by a core neuroanatomical substrate or whether regionally specific neural structures underlie accurate reflection in different cognitive domains. P...

Regional variation models of white matter microstructure

Diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) is a powerful in vivo imaging technique that is particularly sensitive to the underlying microstructure of white matter tissue in the brain. Many models of the DW-MRI signal exist that allow us to relate the signals we measure to various aspects of the tissue structure, including measures of diffusivity, cellularity and even axon size. From histology, we know tha...

Specific effect of the fragile-X mental retardation-1 gene (FMR1) on white matter microstructure.

BACKGROUND Fragile-X syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with intellectual disability and neurobiological abnormalities including white matter microstructural differences. White matter differences have been found relative to neurotypical individuals. AIMS To examine whether FXS white matter differences are related specifically to FXS or more generally to the presence of...

Assessment of Diffusion Anisotropy of White Matter in Areas of the Brain with crossing fibers: A simulation study

Introduction: We present a model of simulation of diffusion in white matter. This model has been used in Diffusion Weighted Imaging researches as a tool for employing cylindrically constrained two-tensor models to identify two independent directions within a voxel and assessing the orientation angle as a parameter that influence on fractional anisotropy.   Materials a...
